5-HMF (5-(Hydroxymethyl)furan-2-carbaldehyde) is derived from sugars and is the link between biomass and furan-based chemicals. Due to its functional groups and reaction sites, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural is a versatile, renewable organic intermediate.
